What you get for that: a short transfer into Bergamo's old town, which is genuinely lovely in its own right, plus easy onward trains into Milan if you want a day of proper city sightseeing without paying Milan hotel rates. We'd take the package and treat Bergamo as the destination, not just the airport. Most travellers who go in expecting a "gateway to Milan" trip end up preferring Bergamo's hilltop centre and skip the train altogether.

Berlin holds steady value for a proper city break

Berlin isn't usually filed under "cheap city break" in most people's heads, but our package checks show a floor of £99 per adult as of 16 August, flight and stay combined from Stansted or Luton. That's a lot of city for under a hundred pounds a head.

Berlin rewards a slightly longer stay than the tightest weekend hop. Three or four nights lets you cover the museums, the food scene, and at least one proper wander through Kreuzberg or Neukölln without feeling rushed. Hotel quality on this route tends to sit comfortably above our 8.0 guest-score floor, so you're not trading price for a miserable stay, you're genuinely getting decent value.

Given the size of the city and the amount there is to do, Berlin at £99 per adult is arguably better value than routes charging similar money for much smaller destinations.

Porto: coastal, characterful, and currently under £110

Porto continues to be one of the more underrated packages on our books. Our live check shows a Lowest packages of £109 per adult as of 16 August, and for that you get riverside old town, port wine cellars, and a coastline that feels like a genuine holiday rather than a quick city dash.

Porto tends to reward three nights minimum. It's compact enough for a weekend but has enough depth, day trips along the Douro valley, the beach at Matosinhos, a proper tram network, that a slightly longer stay pays off. Hotel stock here is consistently solid against our 8.0-plus quality floor, and star ratings on this route often run three and four star for the money, which is better than you'd expect at this price point.

If Lisbon is the city everyone talks about, Porto is the one we'd actually book this summer.

Alicante for reliable Spanish sunshine without the premium

Alicante sits at a live Lowest packages of £109 per adult as of 16 August, and it remains one of the most dependable routes out of Stansted for straightforward Spanish coast without the Barcelona or Ibiza mark-up.

This is less a "city break" in the culture-and-museums sense and more a warm-weather reset, old town, beach, good food, low fuss. Alicante's package pricing has stayed fairly consistent through the summer according to our daily checks, which makes it a safer bet if you're booking a few weeks out rather than watching for a last-minute swing.

Worth noting: at this price band, hotel quality varies more than on some other routes, so it's worth checking the guest score on whatever package you're looking at rather than assuming everything above our floor is equally good. We only ever count stays at 8.0 or higher with at least 50 reviews behind them, so anything below that simply doesn't appear as a genuine package option in the first place.

Madrid: the priciest of this group, still fair for a capital

Madrid rounds out the current list at a Lowest packages of £111 per adult as of 16 August. It's the most expensive route in this particular batch, but context matters here, this is a major European capital, and £111 per person for flight plus a quality-checked hotel is still well below what most people assume a Madrid weekend costs.

Madrid rewards travellers who want proper city energy, tapas crawls, art museums, late nights, over a quieter coastal reset. If that's the kind of weekend you're after, this is currently the strongest capital-city value we're seeing out of London.

If you want more time and a bigger city to explore properly, Berlin at £99 per adult offers serious value for the amount of city you're getting. Stretch it to three or four nights if your dates allow.

If it's warmth and water you're after, Alicante at £109 remains the dependable choice, just double-check the guest score on the specific package before you commit, since quality does vary more at this end of the Spanish coast bookings.

Porto at £109 is arguably the most interesting pick of the lot this summer, less obvious than Lisbon, genuinely characterful, and currently underpriced for what you get.

And if it has to be a capital city with proper culture and nightlife, Madrid at £111 is the fair-value option among the big European capitals right now.
