Milan doesn't try to be Rome or Florence, and that's exactly why it works as a short break — it's a real, busy, working city that happens to have a jaw-dropping cathedral, a serious art scene, and a 6pm aperitivo culture that turns a single drink into a small buffet. It's also one of the best-connected cities in Italy if you fancy a day trip to Lake Como or Bergamo.

April–June and September–October bring the most comfortable weather and the lowest prices outside of fashion-week season. August is unusually quiet (many locals leave the city), but also hot and humid — and a lot of independent restaurants close for the month.

Getting there

Most budget flights from London land at Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), about 50km northeast of the city. A direct coach service connects the airport to Milan Centrale station in around an hour, for roughly £8–10 each way.

Ryanair operates direct flights from Stansted to Bergamo, with flight times of under 2 hours — one of the shortest budget routes from the UK to mainland Europe.

What to see & do

01

Duomo di Milano

The cathedral's rooftop terraces are worth the ticket — close-up views of the spires and gargoyles, with the city laid out beyond. Book the rooftop slot in advance in high season.

02

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

An ornate 19th-century shopping arcade right next to the Duomo — striking architecture, and a good spot for an espresso even if you're not buying anything.

03

Sforza Castle & Sempione Park

A genuine Renaissance fortress with several free museums inside, opening onto a large park that's ideal for a slower afternoon away from the crowds.

04

Navigli district

Milan's canal-side neighbourhood — the heart of the city's aperitivo scene, especially lively at weekends with a Sunday antiques market along the water.

05

The Last Supper (Santa Maria delle Grazie)

Da Vinci's mural requires advance booking, often weeks ahead — but the 15-minute viewing slot is genuinely one of the most memorable things you can do in the city.
