Porto is everything people love about Lisbon, scaled down and priced lower. Tiled façades climb steep hillsides above the Douro, port wine cellars line the riverside in Vila Nova de Gaia, and the food and drink prices are some of the most generous in Western Europe. It's compact enough to properly explore in a long weekend, and rewards slow mornings with a coffee on a miradouro just as much as it does a packed sightseeing day.

April–June and September–October bring the best mix of mild, dry weather and lower prices — July and August are the hottest, busiest, and most expensive months to fly and stay.

Getting there

Porto Airport (OPO) is connected to the centre by Metro line E (violet), reaching São Bento station in around 45 minutes for under €2.60 — one of the cheapest, simplest airport transfers in Europe.

Ryanair, easyJet and TAP all run direct flights from Stansted and Luton at around 2h25. Fares are consistently among the most affordable city-break routes from the UK.

What to see & do

01

Ribeira District

The riverside old town — narrow lanes, balconied houses, and terrace restaurants looking across the Douro to the port wine cellars of Gaia. Best at golden hour from the Dom Luís I Bridge.

02

Livraria Lello

One of the world's most photographed bookshops, with a carved wooden staircase said to have inspired parts of Harry Potter — buy a timed ticket online to skip the queue.

03

Port wine cellars (Vila Nova de Gaia)

Cross the river for tastings at Graham's, Taylor's or Ferreira — most tours are inexpensive and end with a glass on a terrace overlooking Porto's skyline.

04

São Bento Station

A working train station whose entrance hall is covered in over 20,000 hand-painted azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history — free to walk through.
