Alicante is the Costa Blanca base that still works as a short break: beach promenade, old town hill, and direct budget flights from London. Packages here move hard with school holidays — winter sun weeks are where the totals usually look honest. Stays on Plofair clear guest score 8.0+; hotel stars show when the supplier sends them. Recent London package floors favoured November (from about £108), then October and December. Summer weekends fill early. If you want heat without August prices, look at late September or midweek October dates on live packages.

Getting there

Alicante–Elche Airport is 12km from the city centre. The TRAM line connects the airport directly to the city centre in around 25 minutes for under £2 — one of the easiest airport transfers in Spain. Taxis take about 15 minutes and cost around £12–15. The bus (C-6) takes longer but costs under £1.

Ryanair operates multiple daily departures from London Luton, with flight times of around 2h10. Flights are frequent enough that you can usually find reasonable fares outside peak periods without booking very far in advance.

What to see & do

01

Castillo de Santa Bárbara

The clifftop castle dominates the city and offers free entry on foot via the hillside path. The views over the bay are genuinely worth the climb.

02

El Barrio — the old town

The narrow streets around the castle base are full of good tapas bars, local wine, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels nothing like the resort strip to the south.

03

Playa del Postiguet

The central city beach is cleaner than you'd expect for a city beach, and it's a 10-minute walk from the old town. Not the best beach in the region, but convenient.

04

MARQ — Archaeology Museum

One of the best regional archaeology museums in Spain, and genuinely interesting even if that's not usually your thing. Free on Sundays.

05

Explanada de España

The iconic mosaic promenade along the marina is perfect for an evening walk. The marble wave pattern is made of 6.6 million tiles.
