Budget airline fees on London weekend packages: what actually changes the total

A £29 Ryanair fare from Stansted looks clever until checkout. Bags, seats and payment options stack on, and the weekend you thought was cheap is suddenly a different number. For London city breaks that number only matters when you add the stay as well.

Why fees matter more on a weekend package

On a long-haul trip, a £25 bag fee is noise. On a three-night city break, it can be the difference between a package that feels sharp and one that feels ordinary. The fees that usually move a Stansted or Luton weekend

Cabin bag vs personal item. Most budget carriers include a small under-seat bag. A wheeled cabin case often does not. For Barcelona, Lisbon or Porto, a long weekend in one soft bag under the seat is usually enough — and it keeps the package total close to what you saw on the card.

Checked bags. Fine for a week in Palma with beach kit. Expensive and rarely worth it for three nights in Milan or Berlin if you can wash a shirt. Buy the bag at booking if you need it; airport prices are worse.

Seat selection. Free random seats are fine for a 2–3 hour hop. Pay only if you need to sit together with kids or want the exit row. Otherwise that money belongs in dinner in Lisbon, not row 14C.

Boarding passes and airport desks. Print or use the app before you leave. Airport printing and desk check-in are pure waste on a short city break.

Payment and name changes. Some cards still attract a surcharge. Typos in names are expensive. Read the passenger line twice before you pay.

How to price a weekend honestly

• One shared checked bag for a beach weekend → add once, not twice if you can share

Compare that all-in figure across dates, not the naked fare. A slightly higher base fare with a free-enough bag policy can beat a teaser fare with two cabin bags.

City-by-city packing reality

Barcelona and Lisbon reward light packing — walking cities, laundry if you need it, warm evenings for most of the year. Rome and Milan are the same story. Palma and Alicante are where a checked bag sometimes makes sense if you are combining beach and city for four nights.

If the package card already looks good and you can travel with one personal bag, book it. Do not let a £6 seat upsell talk you out of a weekend that was priced fairly as a total.
