How Ryanair's algorithm prices flights in real time. Demand, seat inventory, and competitor fares all play a role.
Ryanair doesn't set a fare and leave it alone. Every time you check a flight, the price you see is the result of an algorithm constantly recalculating based on what's selling, how many seats are left, and what competitors are charging. This is dynamic pricing, and it's why the same London-Barcelona flight might cost £35 one day and £65 the next.
Understanding how it works won't make you a fortune, but it stops you from feeling blindsided when prices shift hours after you last checked.
The three inputs: demand, inventory, and competition
Ryanair's algorithm isn't a mystery—it follows the same logic as hotels, airlines, and ticket vendors everywhere. Three main forces push the price up or down.
Demand. The more people searching for a specific flight, the higher the price climbs. This is especially clear around school holidays, bank holidays, and weekends. A flight to Lisbon on a Friday evening in August will cost more than the same flight on a wet Tuesday in March. Ryanair monitors search volume and booking velocity in real time and adjusts fares accordingly.
Inventory. Every flight has a fixed number of seats. As seats sell, the algorithm assumes fewer remain, so it raises the price to maximise revenue from the last few rows. If a flight has 180 seats and 170 have sold, the remaining 10 are more valuable—so the algorithm prices them higher. This is yield management, and it's standard across the airline industry.
Competitor pricing. Ryanair monitors what easyJet, Wizz Air, and other low-cost carriers are charging on the same route. If a competitor drops their price, Ryanair's algorithm may follow to stay competitive. If competitors are fully booked or pricey, Ryanair has room to raise fares.
How often do prices actually change?
Ryanair's algorithm updates continuously—potentially multiple times per hour. You might see a flight quoted at one price in the morning, check again at lunch, and find it's moved. This doesn't mean Ryanair is deliberately toying with you; it means the algorithm is recalibrating based on real bookings and real-time data.
The rate of change varies wildly. On a quiet route weeks in advance, prices might shift once or twice a day. On a busy route two weeks before departure, prices can jump or drop several times in a single afternoon.
One concrete pattern: prices often drop noticeably late at night (after midnight) or early morning (5–7 am) when demand is lowest. This is also when many people check prices out of habit, which is why you see the common advice to book at unsociable hours. The algorithm isn't smarter then—demand is just genuinely lower.
Why the same seat isn't the same price twice
This is the confusing bit. You and your friend both want to book the same flight. You check first and see £42. Your friend checks 10 minutes later and sees £48. Neither of you booked; nothing changed except the algorithm recalculated.
Two things happen between those two clicks:
- Other people booked seats, so inventory fell slightly.
- The system saw more searches or bookings for that flight, signalling stronger demand.
The algorithm assumes the flight is more attractive now and reprices it upward. This is why watching prices for the same flight over time feels like playing a game of chance—because the algorithm's inputs are changing constantly, even if you're not doing anything different.
What the algorithm doesn't know
The algorithm is powerful but not magical. It reacts to:
- Historical data (what sold well last August, last Christmas, etc.).
- Current inventory and demand.
- Competitor prices.
- Day of the week and season.
It doesn't know if you have flexibility, how badly you need that flight, or if you're willing to fly a different day. It doesn't deliberately punish repeat checkers or reward off-peak searches—though both of those feel true because the algorithm's repricing happens to align with human booking patterns.
How to think about this in practice
Ryanair's pricing isn't random, but it's also not predictable in a way you can exploit. You can't outsmart the algorithm by refreshing at midnight or waiting exactly 72 hours before departure. The algorithm doesn't reward or penalise those things—it just reacts to actual demand.
What you can do is be flexible. Flying midweek is cheaper than Friday. Flying in shoulder season (April, September) is cheaper than peak months. Flying to smaller airports like Porto or Berlin is often cheaper than major hubs like Rome. These aren't algorithm exploits—they're just market truths.
