Porto vs Lisbon: which is the better value city break from London?

Porto and Lisbon both offer great value from London. Here's how they compare on price, what to expect, and which suits your budget.

Porto is cheaper than Lisbon. Full stop. If your priority is stretching your money as far as possible, Porto wins. But cheap isn't everything—Lisbon has better flight frequency, easier connections, and a wider range of neighbourhoods worth staying in. The real answer depends on what kind of trip you want and how much time you have to save a few quid.

The flight difference

Flights from Stansted and Luton to Lisbon run more frequently and are usually cheaper than Porto flights. You'll find more competition on the Lisbon route, which keeps fares down. When you're comparing Lisbon packages and Porto packages, the flight leg often tips Lisbon ahead on headline price.

That said, Porto isn't hard to reach. You'll just see fewer direct options and slightly longer layovers. Check Plof Air for live deals—sometimes a Porto package works out competitive once you factor in the hotel savings you'll make on the ground.

Cost of living: where Porto wins

Once you land, Porto is noticeably cheaper than Lisbon. A beer in a local bar costs less. Restaurant meals—even decent ones—come in well below what you'd pay in the capital. Accommodation is a significant difference too. You can find clean, well-located guesthouses in Porto for considerably less than comparable places in Lisbon.

Lisbon has caught up with tourism over the past decade. Prices in the city centre and popular areas like Alfama have risen sharply. Porto is still discovering itself as a tourist destination, which means less inflation and more authentic pricing.

When to go for better value

Both cities are cheaper outside peak season (May to September). September is a sweet spot—summer tourists have left but the weather is still warm. November to March keeps prices low, though expect greyness and occasional rain.

Lisbon gets busier earlier in the season. If you're flexible, Porto in shoulder months (April, October) offers better value than Lisbon in the same period.

Neighbourhoods: where to base yourself

In Porto: Stay in Miragaia or Cedofeita rather than the Ribeira waterfront. You get the same riverside views from cafes and bars, but accommodation costs half as much. Both neighbourhoods are walkable and central. Miragaia especially feels like where locals actually live.

Don't waste money on a hotel with Douro River views. Walk down to the water at sunset for free. The boardwalks and bridges are some of Europe's best free attractions.

In Lisbon: Príncipe Real or Marvila if you want character without top-tier pricing. Alfama looks beautiful but is expensive and genuinely not that walkable—confusing lanes and steep hills. Alcântara is grittier, cheaper, and closer to the riverside. If you're on a real budget, Belém is further out but has more space and lower prices.

What you actually spend

A Porto break: budget for cheaper meals across the board. Lunch often comes at half Lisbon prices. Transport is affordable—the metro is quick and easy. Attraction prices are similar in both cities, but there are more free things (riverside walks, viewpoints, churches) in Porto.

A Lisbon break: expect to pay more for food, drinks, and accommodation. The metro is slightly more expensive than Porto. But Lisbon has better-developed tourist infrastructure, so it's easier to plan and move around without overthinking costs.

The real trade-off

Porto is quieter and more genuinely affordable. You'll feel like you've discovered something. Lisbon is busier, easier to navigate, and you'll probably spend more but enjoy more choice and variety.

If you're going for three nights or less, Lisbon's better flight connections and easier logistics might save you enough time to justify the slightly higher costs. If you've got four nights or more, Porto's lower daily spending adds up to real savings.

How to spot a good deal

Use Plof Air to set price alerts on both cities. When a Porto package drops, it drops hard—the savings compound because flights and hotels are both cheaper. A good Lisbon deal might actually work out closer to Porto prices because of flight competition.

Compare the full package price, not just flights. A slightly more expensive flight to Porto often means a significantly cheaper hotel, which comes out ahead overall.

Final call

Choose Porto if you want real value and don't mind a slightly slower pace. Choose Lisbon if you prioritize ease and variety over saving money. Both are great cities. Neither will disappoint. But if budget is genuinely your main concern, Porto delivers more bang for your pound.
