The trap at the front of the month is All Saints' Day on 1 November: a few days either side still pull domestic Portuguese travel and nudge city hotels up. Land a fortnight after that and you are in the cheapest run of the year before Christmas markets push December back up. If your only free weekend is 1 November itself, expect the package to look more like late October than like mid-month.

Ribeira is the obvious strip - five minutes from the bridge, every port lodge tour starts near here - and in November it is suddenly within reach when July would have priced you out. Walk across to Vila Nova de Gaia for the lodges and the postcard view back at Ribeira. If you want a quieter night and better weekday restaurant prices, sleep uphill in Bolhão or Baixa: you lose the river window and gain the market.

Skip the airport strip unless the flight lands very late. The metro runs into the centre and this city rewards being on foot. Three nights is the realistic weekend, not a one-day add-on to Lisbon. Ribeira, a lodge in Gaia, and one slower day is a trip. A rushed stopover is not. Livraria Lello will still have a queue even in the rain, so do not build the whole Saturday around a bookshop door.

Sunday: pack for rain, then check the actual Stansted slot

November in Porto is wetter than most UK travellers expect from Portugal. Pack a coat. The upside is shorter queues at the lodges and the cathedral, and restaurant tables you can get without booking three days ahead.

Flight timing is the other quiet cost. Stansted to Porto in November has fewer weekly slots than summer, so the cheap fares cluster on specific days. Shifting a day either way is often worth more than hunting a fare months out. A 06:00 that looked clever on the grid is less clever at 03:30 in a taxi.
