Palma de Mallorca outside peak summer: what to expect and what to pay

Everyone books Mallorca for July and August, then wonders why the old town is heaving and the sun loungers are gone by nine in the morning. Palma outside peak summer is a different, better trip for a lot of people, and it is markedly cheaper too. If you can move your weekend even a few weeks either side of the school holidays, you will notice the difference in your wallet before you notice it in the weather.

What off-season actually means in Palma

Mallorca does not really have an off-season in the way somewhere like the Baltic coast does. It has a peak (mid-June to early September), a shoulder (April, May, June, September, October), and a quiet winter stretch (November to March) where the island slows down but does not shut down. For a London weekender, the shoulder months are the sweet spot. You get sea temperatures still warm enough to swim, daytime highs in the low-to-mid twenties, and none of the queuing that defines the Old Town in August.

May is arguably the best-kept secret. The almond blossom has usually finished but the countryside is still green, the beaches are open without being packed, and restaurant terraces have tables free without a reservation made three weeks in advance. October offers something similar from the other direction: the sea has spent all summer warming up, so it is often more pleasant for swimming in October than it is in May, even though the air temperature is a touch cooler.

Winter is genuinely different. Palma in December or February is a city break, not a beach trip. Think long lunches, market visits, the cathedral without a queue, and day trips into the Serra de Tramuntana mountains where the light in winter is remarkable. It is not for everyone, but if you want cheap flights, empty restaurants, and a completely different personality from the island's summer self, it delivers.

What to pack and expect, month by month

April: unpredictable but mild, 16 to 20 degrees, pack a layer for evenings and be prepared for the odd shower. The countryside is at its best.

May: settling into reliably warm days, 20 to 24 degrees, sea still a little brisk for a long swim but fine for a dip. This is when locals start eating outside every night.

June: close to summer conditions without the July and August crowds, 24 to 27 degrees, book restaurants a day ahead rather than three weeks ahead.

September: still very warm, often the best month for anyone who wants summer weather without summer prices, 25 to 28 degrees, sea at its warmest.

October: cooling gently, 21 to 24 degrees, some beach bars start closing later in the month, still very swimmable early on.

November to March: proper winter by Mallorca standards, 12 to 17 degrees, rain more likely, but also the cheapest flights and quietest streets you will find all year.

What it costs from Stansted and Luton

The number that matters most right now is that live flight plus stay package to Palma from £119 per adult, seen in our checks as of 16 August 2026. That price reflects a shoulder or off-peak window, not the July and August crush, and it is a useful anchor for what "good" looks like on this route.

Looking further ahead, our checks over the last 45 days of package data give a sense of where the floor sits by month. May 2027 packages have been starting from £255, based on 4,455 package rows collected in that window. June 2027 starts from £259 on 4,320 rows. July 2027, which is deep into peak season, starts from £228 on the largest sample we have, 5,625 rows, which tells you July can still throw up a good number if you are flexible on dates and hotel, but you are competing with a lot more demand. August 2027 is the most expensive of the four, with a floor of £292 across 1,125 rows, which fits with everything above about August being the priciest month to fly Stansted or Luton to Palma.

Read those four numbers together and the pattern is fairly clear: July can undercut June on a per-package basis if you catch the right dates, but August is consistently the month to avoid if price is your main driver. May and June sit in between, both cheaper than August and both still giving you genuinely warm, swimmable weather.

Stay quality without paying peak prices

One thing that does not change between seasons is what we consider a stay worth booking. We only surface hotels and apartments with a guest score of 8.0 or higher, and where star ratings are available in the data, that usually means solid three and four-star properties rather than anything worn around the edges. The point of travelling off-season is not to accept a lower standard of stay for a lower price, it is to get the same standard of stay for considerably less money, and often with better availability in the parts of Palma you actually want, like Santa Catalina or the streets just behind the cathedral.

Off-season also means more room to be picky. In August, decent three and four-star places near the old town sell out weeks ahead. In May or October, you can often book ten days out and still get a well-reviewed apartment with a terrace, rather than settling for whatever is left on the edge of town.

What to actually do outside high summer

Palma's old town rewards slow walking more than fast sightseeing, and that is easier to do when it is not 32 degrees and full of tour groups. La Seu cathedral, the Arab baths, and the winding streets around Carrer de Sant Miquel are all far more enjoyable without a crowd pressing at your back. Santa Catalina, the old fishermen's quarter, has turned into the city's best food neighbourhood, and a shoulder-season lunch there without a booking is entirely possible.

Outside the city, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains along the northwest coast are genuinely beautiful in spring and autumn, when hiking temperatures are far more forgiving than midsummer. The villages of Valldemossa, Deia, and Soller are all reachable on a day trip from Palma, and the vintage wooden train from Palma to Soller is one of the better half-day trips in the Balearics regardless of season.

If you do go in winter, the almond blossom in late January and February is a genuine spectacle across the island's interior, and it draws a small but devoted crowd of its own. Combine that with a quiet weekend in Palma itself and you have a city break that barely resembles the beach-holiday reputation Mallorca carries the rest of the year.

How to plan around it

The honest advice is to treat Mallorca as two different trips depending on when you go, and to let the price guide the timing rather than fighting for a fixed date. If your priority is warm sea and manageable crowds, aim for June or September. If your priority is the lowest possible price and you are happy with cooler evenings, April, October, or a winter city break will usually beat everything else on cost.

Given the numbers above, June and July are worth watching closely rather than assuming August is your only summer window. A Lowest packages of £259 in June and £228 in July, against £292 in August, is a meaningful gap over a weekend for two, and it buys you a noticeably calmer version of the same island.
