Five European destinations getting cheaper as crowds move elsewhere

Budget travellers from London airports are finding underrated European cities with falling prices as overtourism shifts the map.

The usual suspects—Barcelona, Venice, Rome—are busier and pricier than ever. But something interesting is happening across Europe's second-tier cities. As travellers deliberately avoid the most congested spots, prices are actually dropping in places that offer just as much character and culture without the queues. For UK budget travellers flying from Stansted or Luton, this shift means smarter value right now in 2026.

Here are five destinations where you'll find noticeably cheaper flights and hotels than you would have five years ago, and where the experience is genuinely uncrowded.

Porto, Portugal

While Lisbon has become a victim of its own popularity—prices climbing year on year—Porto remains well below peak summer rates. The city sits on the Douro River with port wine cellars, medieval streets, and food that punches well above its price tag. Late spring and early autumn flights from Stansted are particularly cheap right now. Hotels in the Ribeira district still feel like a real discovery rather than a tourist trap.

Krakow, Poland

Eastern Europe hasn't gentrified at the pace of Barcelona or Prague. Krakow's historic old town, Jewish quarter, and proximity to Auschwitz (a sobering but important day trip) make it essential to visit—yet accommodation and dining remain genuinely affordable. Budget airlines like Ryanair keep flight prices competitive from London, and once you're there, your money goes far. The city gets busy in summer but never feels as mobbed as Western European capitals.

Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest doesn't have the mountain scenery of Transylvania, but it shouldn't be dismissed. The architecture—Brutalist, Belle Époque, Socialist Realism—is striking. The cafe culture is lively. And the cost is a fraction of what you'd spend in Vienna or Budapest. Package deals bundling flights from Luton with mid-range hotels offer excellent value. Many travellers skip Bucharest entirely, which works in your favour if you want a city break without the crowds.

Palma, Mallorca (outside summer peak)

The island itself is popular, but Palma city—as opposed to beach resorts—remains underrated. The old town around the cathedral is beautiful, the restaurant scene has genuinely improved, and if you travel in May, June, or September rather than July-August, prices drop substantially. Package deals to Palma in shoulder seasons offer beach access plus urban exploration without the peak-season markup.

Athens, Greece

Greece's reputation rests on islands, but Athens itself—Plaka, the Acropolis, the street food—is tremendous. The summer heat is brutal and the crowds are real, but if you go in April or October, the weather is perfect and hotel prices drop noticeably. Flights from both Stansted and Luton are regularly competitive. Eating well and staying decently costs far less than equivalent quality in Western Europe.

Why are these places cheaper?

Partly it's simple economics: as Instagram tourism concentrates on iconic destinations, lesser-known cities don't see the same demand spike. Hotel owners aren't raising prices as aggressively. Airlines keep competitive pricing to fill routes that don't have the volume of Barcelona or Paris. It's not that these places have declined—it's that they've been stable while others have exploded.

There's also a real shift in traveller behaviour. Overtourism fatigue is real. More people are actively seeking places where they can actually enjoy themselves without elbowing through crowds.

How to find the deals

Use flight + hotel package finders like Plof Air to browse live pricing across Stansted and Luton routes. Set price alerts for the destinations above and scan them regularly. Book midweek flights when possible—weekends carry premiums everywhere. Travel in shoulder seasons (late spring, early autumn) rather than peak summer, and you'll find prices noticeably lower and atmospheres genuinely better.

The best travel bargains aren't always the cheapest destinations—they're the ones where prices have actually fallen because demand has shifted elsewhere. Right now, that's where these five cities sit.
