Alicante in January from London: cheap winter-sun packages

January is the cheapest month all year to land in Alicante, and most people booking from Stansted or Luton don't realise it. Everyone chases the October half term dates and the Easter window, so the flights either side of New Year sit there, undersold, while the town gets its best weather of the winter: mid teens, dry, sea breeze instead of sea swimming.

Friday: skip Three Kings, land in the quiet week

The dates that ruin a cheap January weekend are the obvious ones: New Year, then the Spanish Three Kings holiday around 6 January. Families are still travelling, hotels that would otherwise be half empty stay full, and the flight you wanted from Stansted or Luton is the one everyone else wanted too.

From the second week of January the town exhales. Tuesday to Friday departures are the ones that usually undercut a Friday-Monday city break. January light makes it worth doing before lunch rather than after, when the stone is still holding a bit of warmth and you are not squinting into high-summer glare.

Postiguet and Playa de San Juan are fine if you like a seafront coffee. They are not swimming beaches in January, so do not pay extra for a sea-view room you will use as a window. Compared with a January weekend in Barcelona or Rome, Alicante is smaller, slower, and cheaper to eat and drink in. It will not match Rome for museums or Barcelona for nightlife. For a low-effort winter sun hop it is hard to beat. If you want a different island feel in a similar price band, Palma weekend packages are the obvious other look.

Sunday: the cheap slot is only cheap if you can actually take it

A 06:10 Luton departure looks brilliant in a search grid and grim at 03:40 in a taxi. Check the actual Stansted and Luton banks before you congratulate yourself on the headline. An early or very late flight can wipe the saving in transfers, or force an extra night you did not budget.

Alicante is not shut in January. The old town, tapas bars, and most restaurants run as normal. What does close are some beach-specific bars and a handful of seasonal stalls, so do not plan the trip around a summer nightlife strip. Pack a proper jacket for the evening. Daytime mid-teens feel mild until the sea breeze hits after sunset.
